REMINDERS FOR THIS WEEK & EARLY NEXT WEEK:
A reminder that there will be no After School Activities on Monday 5 Nov. Heavy traffic is expected in and around KL on the eve of the Deepavali Holiday (Tuesday 6 Nov). All ES students will return home on the regular school bus at 2:45pm on Monday 5 Nov. There is no school on Tuesday 6 Nov. For those celebrating this holiday, "Happy Deepavali".

INTERNATIONAL FEST FLAG PARADE IN THE ES
From the ES Admin:
International Day will be celebrated in the ES on Friday 9 Nov. from 8:15am with a parade and assembly. This is an exciting event - our first International Day Flag Parade and Assembly at our new campus! Our community is very diverse and we want to help our students understand the strength and richness that comes from our differences while recognizing our commonalities. Students may wear their home country traditional dress, a piece of clothing identifying their home country or the ISKL International Fest tee shirt. The assembly will start with the flag parade around the school followed by an assembly/gathering in the Amphitheater (if it’s raining the assembly will be moved to the ES Gym) to honor each country represented. Parents are invited to attend this special occasion.
CLASS WORK LAST WEEK
Language Arts: Reading, writing, speaking & listening:
Last week, the students completed their realistic fiction book clubs and began our second reading unit titled: ‘Tackling Complexity: Summarizing & Synthesizing Nonfiction’. We will focus on text structures and how these structures help support the main ideas. Students will read from a variety of informational texts, including picture books and articles. This unit will be integrated with our science unit titled Sustainable Energy, so students will also be using texts on this topic to improve their nonfiction reading. During Writing Workshop lessons, the students began unit 2 titled, ‘Informational Writing’. They completed a pre-assessment task with the following prompt:
Think of a topic that you know or have studied about. You will write an informational text that teaches others interesting and important information and ideas about that topic. You have 60 minutes to plan, draft, revise and edit this writing. Write in a way that allows you to show off all you know about informational writing.
In your writing, make sure you include:
-Write a beginning that gets readers interested in the subject and sets them up to learn more about it.
-Include facts and details (examples, stories, statistics, expert words) to teach readers important information and ideas about the subject.
-Organize your writing using transitions words to help readers understand how the information goes together.
-Write an ending, ideally one that reminds readers why this subject is important.
On the preceding day, students were given 30 minutes of online research, where they could take notes. They could use their notes the next day to help them write their essay.
The students also continued their year-long ‘Free Choice Writing Project’ where they continued the process of writing and publishing their own realistic or fantasy story on their laptops using a Google doc. The students also worked on a blog post of their Melaka trip and used pics taken from the trip. I also continued reading our current read aloud titled, ‘Refugee’ by Alan Gratz. The students also continued daily typing practice from 7:55 - 8:10am using the www.typing.com program.
Math:
Last week, the students continued their current math unit, titled, Unit 2: Adding & Subtracting Fractions. They completed these lessons:

Lesson 7: Adding Mixed Numbers Greater Than 2 Using Like Units

Social Studies:
Last week, the students began our first science unit titled, ‘Sustainable Energy’. Last Thurs. 1 Nov. they participated in a whole grade level tuning-in to the unit learning experiences, where the students rotated by class around the five G5 classrooms. for 5 X 20 minute sessions from 10:30am - 12:30pm.

Last Fri. 2 Nov. the students also began working in partnerships in science lab. 3 from 10:30-11:15am on our ‘Electrical Circuits Explorations 1’. They will return to science lab. 3 this coming Wed. for Electrical Circuits exploration 2 & Mon. 12 Nov. for Electrical Circuits 3. They are recording their learning in an ‘Electrical Circuits’ booklet.

COUNSELING LESSONS
There was no counseling lesson last week. Stephanie Stone, our G3-5 Student Counselor, will conduct her next guidance lesson on Mon. 5 Nov. at the usual time: 8:30-9:00am.
STUDENTS LEAVING ISKL AT THE END OF FIRST SEMESTER
If you know that you are leaving KL and moving elsewhere at the end of this semester, please let me know and also contact Uma Esvaran in the Admissions/Student Services Office. (Her Panther Apps email address is uesvaran@iskl.edu.my) The ES Administration is trying to get a handle on who will be leaving in December to help plan for second semester. Thanks for your attention to this. As you know, the first semester ends on Friday 15 Dec. If you are planning to leave early on your end of semester break, please also let me know, so I know how many students will be at school for planning purposes.

Curriculum Information for the Week:
Literacy:
We hear from many parents, how do I support my child in reading anything but fantasy? Well the next reading and writing units are a supportive step in that direction. From now until the winter break students will be immersed in the world of nonfiction (but still have that independent choice reading book!). In fifth grade we ask them to tackle a more complex text and look at how the content is organized, how to decode content specific words, and how to approach a text with multiple main ideas. Since reading and writing are heavily linked, we will also be asking kids to produce this type of writing aligned with our science unit on renewable energy. As a parent you can support by talking about articles that you are reading, current events, or interesting non-fiction books that you have read (in any language!). Who knows, maybe they will set down Percy Jackson for a few minutes...by choice!
Math:
Adding and Subtracting Fractions continues this week as we move into operations with mixed numbers and unlike denominators. Students will continue to develop their conceptual understanding by drawing and labeling rectangular fraction models to show their thinking.
Unit of Study:
The students will finish our learning on Types of Government, and reflect on the Melaka trip. We will also start our first science unit of the year, where students study energy sources and its properties as well as sustainable alternative energy sources. They will also be participating in a variety of lab experiences, looking at electrical circuits, energy consumption and conservation. You can support at home by engaging with your child’s home learning. There is always a component linked to our Unit of Study!

What an amazing trip as students climbed a ropes course, wondered about the rich history of Malaysia and of course went swimming in Melaka. You know it was a rich experience when kids come home smiling and exhausted.

MELAKA TRIP THANKS
We had many wonderful experiences last Tues. and Wed. at Skytrex Melaka on the ‘Pahlawan Thrill’ elevated ropes course and Skymatch team building games, swimming and buffet dinner at The Malacca Club and also touring four of the many museums and historical sights in old Melaka. While it was obvious that a few students were taken out of their comfort zone at Skytrex, they applied a growth mindset and perseverance and all students were able to complete the course. Undoubtedly, the students’ first hand experiences in Melaka deepened their understanding of the history of leadership and government in Melaka. Overall, the students were very well behaved and conducted themselves well on the trip. Very special thanks to our parent chaperones - Sarah Galvin (Chloe’s mum), Bart Field (James’ dad) and Mahetab Abdelaziz (Adam’s mum) for taking the time to help us. Your participation was vital in helping us to manage such a large group of students and keep them all safe.
HALLOWEEN IN THE ES
From the ES Admin:
In the ES, only two parties (one at the end of each semester) will be scheduled each year. Halloween on Wed. 31 Oct. will be a dress up day in the ES only, with no parties (except for Prep R/J). Students may wear simple costumes to school. Elaborate costumes may be brought to school and students may change into them after they arrive and change back into their uniform for the journey home. Students and parents are asked to think about making costumes sustainable. Look around your house for materials, clothing etc. that you can reuse/repurpose. If students have PE, they should come to school dressed in their PE uniforms and change into their Halloween costumes later. If students have swimming, they should come to school dressed in their Halloween costume.

During Writing Workshop lessons, the students continued working on their writing unit 1: Literary Essay (opinion). They completed the writing of their essays on a Google doc and they self-assessed their work using our opinion writing rubric. The students also completed their on-demand opinion writing summative assessment. The students also continued their year-long ‘Free Choice Writing Project’ where they continued the process of writing and publishing their own realistic or fantasy story on their laptops using a Google doc. The students also worked on a blog post of their Melaka trip and used pics taken from the trip. I also continued reading our current read aloud titled, ‘Refugee’ by Alan Gratz. Just prior to and following our annual trip to Melaka this week, the students will continue working in their book club groups using discussions to help them stretch their thinking about the book and identify themes or life lessons using evidence from the text. In writing, they will complete their literary essays, which also discuss themes.
Math:
Adding and Subtracting Fractions continues this week as we move into operations with mixed numbers and unlike denominators. Students will continue to develop their conceptual understanding by drawing and labeling rectangular fraction models to show their thinking.
Unit of Study:
The students will continue our learning on Types of Government, and conclude our preparation for the Melaka trip by looking into the rich history of Melaka.

Curriculum Information for the Week:
Literacy:
Just prior to and following our annual trip to Melaka this week, the students will continue working in their book club groups using discussions to help them stretch their thinking about the book and identify themes or life lessons using evidence from the text. In writing, they will complete their literary essays, which also discuss themes.
Math:
Adding and Subtracting Fractions continues this week as we move into operations with mixed numbers and unlike denominators. Students will continue to develop their conceptual understanding by drawing and labeling rectangular fraction models to show their thinking.
Unit of Study:
The students will continue our learning on Types of Government, and conclude our preparation for the Melaka trip by looking into the rich history of Melaka.

MELAKA FIELD TRIP PREPARATION
A reminder that 5DH & 5KC students, teachers and parent chaperones will be traveling to Melaka on Pandujaya buses this Tues. 23 Oct, leaving school at 8:00am sharp and returning to school on Wed. 24 Oct. at approx. 4:30pm. Please remember to pick up your child at the ES entrance foyer on Wed. 24 Oct. We appreciate the help of our parent chaperones to keep the students safe in Melaka. A reminder - the students will also need to pack their swimsuits, towels etc. because we’ll be swimming at The Malacca Club pool from 6:30-7:00pm on Tues. 23 Oct. Regarding packing, please ensure your child packs the following into their backpack NOT their bigger bag: Snack & lunch on the first day, drink bottle, hat, sunscreen and a small hand towel would be a good idea, RM50 in small notes, camera (optional), book to read, pack of cards. The reason we are asking for the above items to be packed in your child’s backpack is because it will be difficult and time consuming to get access to their bigger bags until we arrive in Melaka because they will be stored in the baggage compartment of the bus. All other items on the packing list should be packed in your child’s bigger bag. When your child arrives at school on Tues. morning, whether by their usual bus or car, they should drop their bigger bag in the Movement Room, near the ES entrance foyer on the way to the Band rooms and bring their smaller backpack upstairs to the classroom. I need to do student attendance before we leave. If your child takes regular medication, please remind him/her to hand the medication to me for dispensing when they arrive in the classroom on Tues. 23 Oct. Thanks in advance for your help and support in getting your child prepared for our Melaka trip.
INTERNATIONAL FEST FLAG PARADE IN THE ES
From the ES Admin:
International Day will be celebrated in the ES on Friday 9 Nov. from 8:15am with a parade and assembly. Our community is very diverse and we want to help our students understand the strength and richness that comes from our differences while recognizing our commonalities. Students may wear their home country traditional dress, a piece of clothing identifying their home country or the ISKL International Fest tee shirt. The assembly will start with the flag parade around the school followed by an assembly/gathering in the ES Theater to honor each country represented. We are working on the details of how it will look in our new campus. More details to come!
CLASS WORK LAST WEEK
Language Arts: Reading, writing, speaking & listening:
Last week, the students continued reading their latest realistic fiction books in their book clubs, using thinkmarks to guide discussion and sequence brain frames to record the important events happening in their books. During Writing Workshop lessons, the students continued working on their writing unit 1: Literary Essay (opinion). They completed the writing of their essays on a Google doc. The students also continued their year-long ‘Free Choice Writing Project’ where they continued the process of writing and publishing their own realistic or fantasy story on their laptops using a Google doc. I also continued reading our current read aloud titled, ‘Refugee’ by Alan Gratz. The students also continued daily typing practice from 7:55 - 8:10am using the www.typing.com program.

Lesson 2: Using Equivalent Fraction to Add
Lesson 3: Using Equivalent Fractions to Add Mixed Numbers

Social Studies:
Last week, to prepare the students for our Melaka trip, I continued introducing them to the various waves of leaders and governments that came to power in Melaka. The students learned about the 7 voyages of Admiral Zheng He’s (Cheng Ho) Treasure Fleet from China to Melaka from 1405 to 1434 and the arrival of the Portuguese more than a century later in 1511. The students also learned about the arrival of the Dutch in 1641, the British and the Japanese and the return to British rule in 1945 after the end of WWII, followed by Malaysia’s independence in 1957.
Counseling Lesson:
Stephanie Stone, our G4 & 5 Counselor, conducted her regular class lesson last Wed. morning from 8:00-8:30am continuing her series of lessons on ‘Growth V Fixed Mindset’.
