Dear Parents,
Curriculum Information for this Week:
Literacy:
Students will continue to learn about Social Issues and Human Rights. They will continue researching a variety of topics and begin narrowing down their ideas. They will reinforce and build on their note-taking skills as well as learning more about trustworthy resources and identifying perspective. As they research, they will be writing down their ideas to help them solidify their thinking around the topic.
Math:
Students will continue our Volume and Measurement Unit. They will explore volume by building and counting unit cubes as well as learning the relationship between different units of volume measurement.
Unit of Study:
Students will continue our Social Change unit by preparing for ‘Night of the Notables’ 2019 presentation. Class scripts have been finalised and we will begin our practices. Students will dig deeper into the Change Maker or Social Issue that they are exploring for their blackboard presentations. The Night of the Notables presentations will be on the afternoon of Tuesday, 7 May in the Robert B Gaw Theatre from 5-6pm.

We had our first assembly in RBG Theatre for Earth Week. We discussed our goal in reducing plastic and food waste. Please encourage your child to bring less plastic for snack and lunch.

G5 DRAMA WORKSHOPS THANKS
Parents, thank you so much for supporting our Drama Workshop with Tim Howe and his HS drama students last Sat. 27 Apr. Your support in getting your child to school and picked up on time was very much appreciated. I thought our 5DH session from 2:00-3:30pm was very worthwhile for the students and gave them much needed direction and tips to improve their presentation skills and use of the stage. The students and I are looking forward to presenting to you on Tues. 7 May in the RBG Theatre at 5pm! I sent a huge thank you to Tim Howe - HS Director of Drama and Theatre Manager, Sesha Kalimuthu - Asst Theatre Manager, Daniel DeCruz - Theatre Tech Manager, and the various HS drama students who worked hard with our G5 students all day on Sat. from 8:00am-5:30pm! Their energy, creativity and dedication to helping us is very much appreciated.

CLASS WORK LAST WEEK
Language Arts: Reading, writing, speaking & listening:
Last week, the students continued working on our next reading and writing units. The reading unit it titled, ‘Unit 4: Informational Reading to Guide and Support Research’ and the writing unit is titled, ‘Unit 4: Expository Writing (information and opinion). Both literacy units are integrated with and support our social studies unit titled, ‘Social Change’. The students continued their historical fiction/biography books in their Book Clubs and for writing, they continued to work on practicing and tweaking their group scripts for our class item vignettes for our class Night of the Notables presentation. Most students have completed their individual research and note-taking on a social issue of their choice and are working on using their research to create an information or opinion essay. The essay will one of the important pieces of work included on their Social Change Blackboard Project. They also continued their year-long ‘Free Choice Writing Project’ where they continued the process of writing and publishing their own realistic or fantasy story on their laptops using a Google doc. For read aloud, I completed reading a book titled, ‘A Long Walk to Water’, by Linda Sue Park and began a new read aloud, titled ‘Iqbal’ by Francesco D’Adamo, which is a biography of child labor activist, Iqbal Masih, from Pakistan. The students also continued daily typing practice from 7:50 - 8:10am using the www.typing.com program.
Math:
Last week, the students continued working on Unit 7: Volume and Measurement. They completed the following lessons:
Lesson 2: ‘Water, Water’, which involved the estimation of the amount of water used on average by individuals and households each day - 340 liters - compared to the 23 liters of water per astronaut per day on the NASA space shuttle missions. The students were surprised by these figures!

Lesson 3: ‘Building With Centimeter Cubes’ - explore volume by building with and counting unit cubes.
Lesson 4: ‘Packing’ - find the volume of a right rectangular prism by packing with cubic units and counting.
Lesson 5: Composing and Decomposing Right Rectangular Prisms’ - compose and decompose right rectangular prisms using layers.
Lesson 6: Determining the Volume of Rectangular Prisms’ - by counting centimeter cubes.
The students also worked on volume and measurement using the online platform ‘Studyladder’. Students can also work on the Studyladder website at home by clicking on www.studyladder.com
SOCIAL STUDIES

The students continued working on our Night of the Notables presentation class item topic script on ‘Plastic Pollution’ and practicing/refining their group items. The students continued their individual research on a social change issue of their choice and the notable person/people they would like to focus on for their Social Change Blackboard Projects. They continued their individual research and note-taking and working on their five paragraph information or opinion essay on their chosen social change issue and notable person/people.
COUNSELING LESSONS
Our G4&5 Counselor - Stephanie Stone - conducted two counseling lessons last week on Tues. 23 Apr. and also on Wed. 24 Apr. The first date was a lesson make-up day for a lesson missed the previous week. Stephanie’s next lesson will be on Tues. 7 May, which is a day 7, at the usual time from 8:30-9:00am.

Dear Parents,
Curriculum Information for this Week:
Literacy:
Students will continue to learn about Social Issues and Human Rights through picture books, historical fiction, biographies, autobiographies and research. Classes have been diving further into Informational text while focusing on one social issue and/or a Human Rights Issue. Ask your child which human rights issue his/her class is exploring. Classes have been building a thesis with a focus on a social issue including different social change makers. All of this is in preparation for creating our class presentations for Night of the Notables, May 7th.
Math:
This week we will begin our Volume and Measurement Unit. Students will estimate and measure shapes. Students will also explore liquid volume using water and make comparisons and conversions. Students will explore volume by building and counting unit cubes in order to understand volume.
Unit of Study:
We will continue our Social Change unit by preparing for our ‘Night of the Notables’ presentation and continue writing/tweaking our scripts as a class. Students will begin to think about a Change Maker or Social Issue that they would like to explore for their Social Change Blackboard projects. The Night of the Notables presentations will be on May 7th at 5:00pm in the RBG Theatre. We will continue preparing for our Night of the Notables class items this week.

**G5 DRAMA WORKSHOPS REMINDER
A reminder that 5DH students need to arrive 15-30 minutes before their scheduled Drama Workshop time with Tim Howe and the HS drama students this Sat. 27 Apr. Our class time is scheduled from 2:00-3:00pm, so please aim to have your child at school by 1:30-1:45pm at the latest. We will meet in the classroom, take attendance, discuss our plans/expectations for the session and walk over the RBG Theatre as a group, ready to begin our session on time at 2:00pm sharp. When our session is finished at 3:30pm, I’ll walk the students to the ES foyer where you can pick up your child. Please arrange to be back at school by 2:45pm for the 3:00pm pick up of your child. Thanks in advance for your help in organizing the students.

In addition to the above, they completed the unit pre-assessment, the tuning-in to the unit activity titled, ‘Got Cubes?’ and Lesson 1: Estimate, Measure, Estimate, involving the estimation, measurement and conversion of various items in the classroom.

As promised last week, here is the Enduring Understanding, Essential Questions and Unit Questions that the students will explore in this unit:
Enduring Understanding:
Measurements can be used to describe, compare, and understand the world around us.
Standard units of measure enable people to interpret results or data.
Essential Questions:
How does what we measure influence how we measure?
Why do we need standard units of measurement?
Unit Questions:
How can we measure volume?
What are cubic units?
Unit Overview:
In this unit, students will recognize volume as an attribute of three-dimensional space. They will understand that volume can be measured by finding the total number of same size units of volume required to fill the space without gaps or overlaps. They will understand that a 1-unit by 1-unit by 1-unit cube is the standard unit for measuring volume. They will select appropriate units, strategies, and tools for solving problems that involve estimating and measuring volume. They will decompose three-dimensional shapes and find volumes of right rectangular prisms by viewing them as decomposed into layers of arrays of cubes. They will measure necessary attributes of shapes in order to determine volumes to solve real world and mathematical problems. Students will also convert like measurement units within the metric system and solve word problems relating to those conversions.

**G5 DRAMA WORKSHOPS REMINDER
A reminder that 5DH students need to arrive 15-30 minutes before their scheduled Drama Workshop time with Tim Howe and the HS drama students this Sat. 27 Apr. Our class time is scheduled from 2:00-3:00pm, so please aim to have your child at school by 1:30-1:45pm at the latest. We will meet in the classroom, take attendance, discuss our plans/expectations for the session and walk over the RBG Theatre as a group, ready to begin our session on time at 2:00pm sharp. When our session is finished at 3:30pm, I’ll walk the students to the ES foyer where you can pick up your child. Please arrange to be back at school by 2:45pm for the 3:00pm pick up of your child. Thanks in advance for your help in organizing the students.

CLASS WORK LAST WEEK
Language Arts: Reading, writing, speaking & listening:
Last week, the students continued working on our next reading and writing units. The reading unit it titled, ‘Unit 4: Informational Reading to Guide and Support Research’ and the writing unit is titled, ‘Unit 4: Expository Writing (information and opinion). Both literacy units are integrated with and support our social studies unit titled, ‘Social Change’. The students continued their historical fiction/biography books in their Book Clubs and for writing, they continued to work on writing/tweaking their group scripts for our class item vignettes for our class Night of the Notables presentation. They also continued their individual research and note-taking on a social issue of their choice, which they will use to create an information or opinion essay. The essay will one of the important pieces of work included on their Social Change Blackboard Project. They also continued their year-long ‘Free Choice Writing Project’ where they continued the process of writing and publishing their own realistic or fantasy story on their laptops using a Google doc. For read aloud, I continued reading a book titled, ‘A Long Walk to Water’, by Linda Sue Park. The students also continued daily typing practice from 7:50 - 8:10am using the www.typing.com program.
Math:
Last week, the students completed our math unit titled, ‘Unit 6: Order of Operations’. Lessons completed:

They also began our next unit, titled Unit 7: Volume and Measurement.
In addition to the above, they completed the unit pre-assessment, the tuning-in to the unit activity titled, ‘Got Cubes?’ and Lesson 1: Estimate, Measure, Estimate, involving the estimation, measurement and conversion of various items in the classroom.
The students also worked on volume and measurement using the online platform ‘Studyladder’. Students can also work on the Studyladder website at home by clicking on www.studyladder.com
As promised last week, here is the Enduring Understanding, Essential Questions and Unit Questions that the students will explore in this unit:
Enduring Understanding:
Measurements can be used to describe, compare, and understand the world around us.
Standard units of measure enable people to interpret results or data.
Essential Questions:
How does what we measure influence how we measure?
Why do we need standard units of measurement?
Unit Questions:
How can we measure volume?
What are cubic units?
Unit Overview:
In this unit, students will recognize volume as an attribute of three-dimensional space. They will understand that volume can be measured by finding the total number of same size units of volume required to fill the space without gaps or overlaps. They will understand that a 1-unit by 1-unit by 1-unit cube is the standard unit for measuring volume. They will select appropriate units, strategies, and tools for solving problems that involve estimating and measuring volume. They will decompose three-dimensional shapes and find volumes of right rectangular prisms by viewing them as decomposed into layers of arrays of cubes. They will measure necessary attributes of shapes in order to determine volumes to solve real world and mathematical problems. Students will also convert like measurement units within the metric system and solve word problems relating to those conversions.
SOCIAL STUDIES
Last week, the students continued our social studies unit titled, ‘Social Change’. The students continued working on our Night of the Notables presentation class item topic script on ‘Plastic Pollution’. The students continued their individual research on a social change issue of their choice and the notable person/people they would like to focus on for their Social Change Blackboard Projects. They took handwritten notes or used a Google doc. Their first job will be to write a five paragraph information or opinion essay on their chosen social change issue and notable person/people.

Curriculum Information for this Week:
Literacy:
Students will continue to learn about social issues, human rights and activists through historical fiction, biographical and autobiographical texts. They are also focusing on informational texts in their Book Clubs throughout this unit. Students will also continue to review and practice informational and opinion writing in this unit. Readers at this level will be asking themselves about author bias, comparing varying opinions and learning how to summarize more complex ideas.This work all culminates in our 'Night of the Notables' Presentation on Tuesday May 7.
Math:
The students will continue the unit titled ‘Order of Operations’, practicing this skill using daily warm ups, math lessons and in their math review home learning sheet. Students will continue to evaluate how to use numerical expressions with parentheses, brackets and braces. They will explain how to use these symbols in order to identify, write and describe simple numerical expressions.
Unit of Study:
The students will continue our unit titled, ‘Social Change’. One of the highlights of the G5 calendar - the “Night of the Notables” presentation, will be held on Tuesday May 7, from 5:00-6:00 pm in the Robert B. Gaw Theatre. All parents of G5 students are invited to attend. G5 students took home a hard copy of a parent letter two weeks ago, which explained our plans for the Night of the Notables presentation and also our plans for our drama workshops with Tim Howe and his HS drama students on Saturday 27 April. This week the students will continue reading historical fiction read alouds and historical fiction and social issue picture books. They will also continue researching their class social change topic for the Night of the Notables presentation and begin creating a class script. Here is a list of the social change topics each G5 class has chosen:

5CC/KH - Animal Rights
