Dear Parents,
Curriculum Information for this Week:
Literacy:
Students have chosen a social change issue of interest, done their research and taken notes. They have written their essays linking their social issue to a notable person/people who have worked on or are working on improving their social issue. The students will continue working on various other pieces of work to be included in their Social Change Blackboard Project, such as poems, magazine covers and timelines. Parents are invited to attend a ‘G5 Social Change Blackboard Project Share’ on Tuesday 4 June from 1:30-2:30pm in G5 classrooms and common area.
Math:
Students are now doing their final math unit of the semester, Unit 8: 2D Figures. They are reviewing the properties of polygons and will use this knowledge to help categorize them.
Unit of Study:
Students are immersed in understanding the impacts of social change on a society. The four main areas of focus are…
Understanding the rights and responsibilities of the individual
Understanding how some people can influence the lives and thinking of others
Developing open-ended questions to guide research and understanding
Using the research process to answer inquiry questions

Monday May 27: G5 Orientation Visit to the Middle School. G5 students and teachers will be involved in a MS Orientation Visit. The orientation program will be conducted from 9:00- 11:00 am. All G5 students will be involved in the program. G5 students will not go to their usual PE or World Language lessons on this day. Even if your child is leaving ISKL at the end of this school year, they are expected to participate. The main purpose of the visit is for the students to meet the MS Administrators, their G6 teachers, learn about the Middle School 1:1 laptop program and be introduced to their G6 schedules. **The MS will make a snack available, so the students will need to bring RM10, or a snack from home. Since it’s Ramadan, alternative arrangements will be made during snack time at the MS for those G5 students who are fasting.

Thursday June 13: High School Social Change Maker’s Conference. Five HS presenters will share their work with G5 students and teachers from 1:30-2:30pm in classrooms.
Friday June 14: Moving on Ceremony from 8:30-9:30am in the Robert B. Gaw Theater, followed by a reception in MPR5/6, also known as the Community Room, from 9:30-10:15am. Parents, you are welcome to take your child home after the reception.

Many thanks to our G5 GLC - John Beattie - and all our G5 Room Parents and parents who helped organize and volunteer at the Wet & Wild stations last Friday morning. The students had a lot of fun on the field, so thank you to all who contributed to the success of the morning.

On Mon. 27 May, G5 students and teachers will be involved in a MS Orientation Visit. The orientation program will be conducted from 9:00- 11:00am. All G5 students will be involved in the program. G5 students will not go to their usual PE or World Language lessons on this day. Even if your child is leaving ISKL at the end of this school year, they are expected to participate. The main purpose of the visit is for the students to meet the MS Administrators, their G6 teachers, learn about the Middle School 1:1 laptop program and be introduced to their G6 schedules. The MS will provide our G5 students with a morning snack. Since it’s Ramadan, alternative arrangements will be made during snack time at the MS for those G5 students who are fasting.

Last week, the students discontinued their historical fiction/biography books in their Book Clubs because they focused on working on the various pieces of work they need to produce for their Social Change Blackboards. They also continued their year-long ‘Free Choice Writing Project’ where they continued the process of writing and publishing their own realistic or fantasy story on their laptops using a Google doc. For read aloud, I continued reading ‘Esperanza Rising’, a historical fiction book set in 1930s Mexico by Pam Munoz Ryan. The students also continued daily typing practice from 7:50 - 8:10am using the www.typing.com program.
Math:
Last week, the students began working on our final math unit titled, ‘Unit 8: 2D Figures’. Lessons and learning experiences completed:

WET & WILD & SWIMMING CARNIVAL DAY
On Fri. 24 May, the PTA and ES PE Dept will be holding our annual Wet & Wild and Swimming Carnival Day. G5 students will be in the pool first from 8:15-9:00, showing their swimming skills and then they will move to the field from 9:05-9:50 for the wet & wild activity stations. Students should come to school on Fri. morning with their swimsuits on under their school uniforms. They should bring a change of underwear to change into after the event. In the pool, the goal is for students to show the skill progression that they have been making throughout the year in their PE swim lessons. While we are having swim races on this day, our focus is all about having fun. So we're skipping the ribbons, trophies and points totals, and focusing on students showing what they can do and enjoying their time in the pool. At the same time as races are happening in the pool, the PTA will be running the Wet & Wild games out on the field. Click HERE for all the details.

Last week, the students continued working on our reading unit titled, ‘Unit 4: Informational Reading to Guide and Support Research’ and our writing unit is titled, ‘Unit 4: Expository Writing (information and opinion). Both literacy units are integrated with and support our social studies unit titled, ‘Social Change’. The students discontinued their historical fiction/biography books in their Book Clubs because they focused on working on the various pieces of work they need to produce for their Social Change Blackboards. They also continued their year-long ‘Free Choice Writing Project’ where they continued the process of writing and publishing their own realistic or fantasy story on their laptops using a Google doc. For read aloud, I finished reading a book titled ‘Iqbal’ by Francesco D’Adamo, which is a biography of child labor activist, Iqbal Masih, from Pakistan. I began reading ‘Esperanza Rising’, a historical fiction book set in 1930s Mexico by Pam Munoz Ryan. The students also continued daily typing practice from 7:50 - 8:10am using the www.typing.com program.
Math:
Last week, the students completed Unit 7: Volume and Measurement. Lessons and learning experiences completed:
Lesson 12: Solving real world volume problems
Students then reviewed the unit by viewing a variety of videos on volume from the Learnzillion website.
The students also worked on volume and measurement using the online platform ‘Studyladder’. Students can also work on the Studyladder website at home by clicking on www.studyladder.com
The students also completed the Unit 7: Volume and Measurement end-of-unit assessment. Our next and final math unit for the year is titled, Unit 8: 2D Figures. Here’s the unit overview:
Students draw two-dimensional shapes to analyze their attributes and use those attributes to classify them. Familiar figures, such as parallelograms, rhombuses, squares, trapezoids, etc., have all been defined in earlier grades and, in Grade 4, students have gained an understanding of shapes beyond the intuitive level. Grade 5 extends this understanding through an in-depth analysis of the properties and defining attributes of quadrilaterals. Grade 4’s work with the protractor is applied to construct various quadrilaterals. Using measurement tools illuminates the attributes used to define and recognize each quadrilateral. Students see, for example, that the same process they used to construct a parallelogram will also produce a rectangle when all angles are constructed to measure 90°. Students then analyze defining attributes and create a hierarchical classification of quadrilaterals.

COUNSELING LESSONS
Stephanie Stone’s last counseling lesson for this school year was last Fri. 17 May. Stephanie will now work with groups of students who are leaving the school at the end of the year to help them finish the year well and give them strategies to help them cope with the transition to a new place.

CLASS WORK LAST WEEK
Language Arts: Reading, writing, speaking & listening:
Last week, the students continued working on our reading unit titled, ‘Unit 4: Informational Reading to Guide and Support Research’ and our writing unit is titled, ‘Unit 4: Expository Writing (information and opinion). Both literacy units are integrated with and support our social studies unit titled, ‘Social Change’. The students discontinued their historical fiction/biography books in their Book Clubs because they focused on working on the various pieces of work they need to produce for their Social Change Blackboards. They also continued their year-long ‘Free Choice Writing Project’ where they continued the process of writing and publishing their own realistic or fantasy story on their laptops using a Google doc. For read aloud, I finished reading a book titled ‘Iqbal’ by Francesco D’Adamo, which is a biography of child labor activist, Iqbal Masih, from Pakistan. I began reading ‘Esperanza Rising’, a historical fiction book set in 1930s Mexico by Pam Munoz Ryan. The students also continued daily typing practice from 7:50 - 8:10am using the www.typing.com program.
Math:
Last week, the students completed Unit 7: Volume and Measurement. Lessons and learning experiences completed:
Lesson 12: Solving real world volume problems
Students then reviewed the unit by viewing a variety of videos on volume from the Learnzillion website.
The students also worked on volume and measurement using the online platform ‘Studyladder’. Students can also work on the Studyladder website at home by clicking on www.studyladder.com
The students also completed the Unit 7: Volume and Measurement end-of-unit assessment. Our next and final math unit for the year is titled, Unit 8: 2D Figures. Here’s the unit overview:
Students draw two-dimensional shapes to analyze their attributes and use those attributes to classify them. Familiar figures, such as parallelograms, rhombuses, squares, trapezoids, etc., have all been defined in earlier grades and, in Grade 4, students have gained an understanding of shapes beyond the intuitive level. Grade 5 extends this understanding through an in-depth analysis of the properties and defining attributes of quadrilaterals. Grade 4’s work with the protractor is applied to construct various quadrilaterals. Using measurement tools illuminates the attributes used to define and recognize each quadrilateral. Students see, for example, that the same process they used to construct a parallelogram will also produce a rectangle when all angles are constructed to measure 90°. Students then analyze defining attributes and create a hierarchical classification of quadrilaterals.
SOCIAL STUDIES
Last week, the students continued our social studies unit titled, ‘Social Change’. The students worked on the various pieces of work they will need for their Social Change Blackboards.
COUNSELING LESSONS
Stephanie Stone’s last counseling lesson for this school year was last Fri. 17 May. Stephanie will now work with groups of students who are leaving the school at the end of the year to help them finish the year well and give them strategies to help them cope with the transition to a new place.

The MS will provide our G5 students with a morning snack. Since it’s Ramadan, alternative arrangements will be made during snack time at the MS for those G5 students who are fasting.

G5 ‘NIGHT OF THE NOTABLES’ (NotN) PRESENTATION THANKS
Many thanks to all parents who attended our G5 NotN Presentation last Tues. night 7 May from 5:00-6:00pm. Students and teachers worked hard to prepare for the presentation. I’d also like to take this opportunity to congratulate all G5 students, but especially 5DH students for their fantastic presentation! I think you will agree, they all did a great job on the stage, delivering their lines on the night with volume, passion and clarity. I’d also like to thank the students for their efforts in creating their group scripts and memorizing their lines. The students will now focus their attention on completing their ‘Social Change Blackboards’. Please see below for further details regarding our blackboard learning shares. Following the presentation last Tues. night, the students completed a reflection on the presentation and process on their student blogs, so take a look at what they wrote on their student blogs on the bottom right-hand corner of the 5DH Class Blog.
SOCIAL CHANGE BLACKBOARDS
Now that the ‘Night of the Notables Presentation’ is over, 5DH students have begun working on their ‘Social Change Blackboards’, which will showcase their learning on an important social issue and a notable person/people involved in making a positive difference on that issue. Students will present their blackboards to G5 students and teachers on Tues. 4 June from 10:30-11:15am. They will also present to G4 students and teachers on the same day from 11:30am-12:15pm and also to parents of G5 students from 1:30-2:30pm. Parents will be sent an invitation email message shortly. With only 13 school days remaining before the Social Change Blackboard Shares, the students home learning for this coming week is to work on various pieces of work from the G5 Blackboard Learning Celebration Checklist - 2019. Since all the work for the blackboards is electronic, please allow your child to have access to a laptop or desktop computer at home so they can complete the various checklist items and meet the Mon. 3 June work deadline.

They will also link their social issue to a notable person/people who have worked on or are working on improving their social issue. In addition, to writing their essay, the students will also begin working on various other pieces of work to be included in their Social Change Blackboard Project. Parents are invited to attend a ‘G5 Social Change Blackboard Project Share’ on Tuesday 4 June from 1:30-2:30pm in G5 classrooms and common area.
Math:
Students will continue our Volume and Measurement Unit. They will select appropriate units, strategies, and tools for solving problems that involve estimating and measuring volume. They will decompose three-dimensional shapes and find volumes of rectangular prisms by viewing them as decomposed into layers of arrays of cubes. They will measure necessary attributes of shapes in order to determine volumes to solve real world and mathematical problems. Students will also convert like measurement units within the metric system and solve word problems relating to those conversions.
Unit of Study:
Students will continue our Social Change unit by preparing for ‘Night of the Notables’ 2019 presentation. We will be conducting our final practice sessions in the RBG Theatre this Monday and Tuesday afternoons. Our practice schedules have been shared with students. Students will continue to dig deeper into the social issue and the social change makers they are exploring for their ‘Social Change Blackboard Projects’. The Night of the Notables presentations will be on the afternoon of Tuesday, 7 May in the Robert B Gaw Theatre from 5-6pm. We look forward to seeing parents at the show!

Monday, May 6: Ramadan begins. It’s also Night of the Notables Yearbook photos time with Max Wright from 10:45-11:15 in the RBG Theatre. We’ll also do a Tech & Dress Rehearsal from 11:15-12:15, followed by a presentation to a G4 audience from 1:45-2:40 pm, which will be videoed.
Tuesday, May 7: Interschool Novel Knockout for participating G4 and G5 students. It will be held at ISKL.
Tuesday May 7: G5 ‘Night of the Notables’ Presentation, in the RBG Theatre from 5-6pm (G5 students will stay at school after dismissal at 2:45pm but will not be attending ASAs or baseball on this day.)

Last Tuesday afternoon, we conducted our first whole grade level practice of our Night of the Notables Presentation in MPR4. It was wonderful and exciting to see what all our G5 classes have been working on!

CLASS WORK LAST WEEK
Language Arts: Reading, writing, speaking & listening:
Last week, the students continued working on our reading unit titled, ‘Unit 4: Informational Reading to Guide and Support Research’ and our writing unit is titled, ‘Unit 4: Expository Writing (information and opinion). Both literacy units are integrated with and support our social studies unit titled, ‘Social Change’. The students continued their historical fiction/biography books in their Book Clubs and for writing, they continued to work on practicing and tweaking their group scripts for our class item vignettes for our class Night of the Notables Presentation. Most students have completed their individual research and note-taking on a social issue of their choice and are working on using their research to create an information or opinion essay. The essay will one of the important pieces of work included on their Social Change Blackboard Project. They also continued their year-long ‘Free Choice Writing Project’ where they continued the process of writing and publishing their own realistic or fantasy story on their laptops using a Google doc. For read aloud, I continued reading a book titled ‘Iqbal’ by Francesco D’Adamo, which is a biography of child labor activist, Iqbal Masih, from Pakistan. The students also continued daily typing practice from 7:50 - 8:10am using the www.typing.com program.
Math:
Last week, the students continued working on Unit 7: Volume and Measurement. They completed the following lessons:
Checkpoint 2
Lesson 7: Using multiplication to calculate volume
Lesson 8: Using centimeters and millimeters to calculate volume
Lesson 9: How many ways? Developing a formula for calculating the volume of cubes and rectangular prisms.
Last Tues. the students also completed their online MAP math test for their math lesson.
The students also worked on volume and measurement using the online platform ‘Studyladder’. Students can also work on the Studyladder website at home by clicking on www.studyladder.com
SOCIAL STUDIES
Last week, the students continued our social studies unit titled, ‘Social Change’. The students continued to practice our Night of the Notables presentation class items on ‘Plastic Pollution’. The students also continued their individual research on a social change issue of their choice and the notable person/people they would like to focus on for their Social Change Blackboard Projects. They continued to use their individual research to create a five paragraph information or opinion essay on their chosen social change issue and notable person/people.
COUNSELING LESSONS
Since there was no day 7 last week, there was no counseling lesson. Stephanie Stone’s next lesson will be on Tues. 7 May - the next day 7, at the usual time from 8:30-9:00am.
